Turning to Face the Moon

(Level – Medium Difficulty)

This song is a cool and airy response to the melancholy old round ‘Ah Poor Bird’.  I’ve always imagined him high in the sky, remote, and yet aware of all the troubled spirits below him.  This song has nice solo verse lines for the high tenors to make their own, and a hypnotic rhythm to carry it along.

LYRICS (C. Mayers)

(A response to the traditional round ‘Ah poor bird’)

Doom dee – doom, doom dee – doom, doom dee – doom, doom dee – doom,

By the power of my wing, rising through the dark I sing,
Keeping my eye on the moon.
Over every living thing, quiet dreams and peace I bring,
Keeping my eye on the moon.

Far above the shadows boldly, only space and stars there to hold me,
I sweep the cobalt sky, finding courage; never afraid to try –
By the power of my wing - light into the dark I bring.

Doom dee – doom, doom dee – doom, doom dee – doom, doom dee – doom,

By the power of my wing, rising through the dark I sing,
Keeping my eye on the moon.
Over every living thing, quiet dreams and peace I bring,
Keeping my eye on the moon.

Through the cloudy curtain rising, clarity of starlight surprising,
I climb the velvet sky, finding courage; never afraid to try –
By the power of my wing - light into the dark I bring.

Ah brave bird, keep the moon in sight, raise your shining eye, bathe in silver light.
Ah poor bird, rise above your woes,
By the power of my wing, light into the dark I bring,

By the power of my wing, rising through the dark I sing,
Keeping my eye on the moon.
Over every living thing, quiet dreams and peace I bring,
Keeping my eye on the moon.
Keeping my eye on the moon.

Turning to face - the - moon.
