Australian Christmas carol

In December

(Level – Medium Difficulty)

This is a uniquely Australian Christmas carol, dealing with the paradox of our hot and sunny experience of the traditional European cold-weather Festival.  It features an ancient sound and style, a firm, exultant pulse, and it will take Australian singers to places that they know and love.  This song has never been performed, so here is a chance to present a new piece – please let me know if you do!  The last two bars are challenging for the tenors, but sound just great when you are confident.

After flat-fee payment and downloading you can make as many copies as you need for your choir.

LYRICS (C. Mayers)

In December, the ancient festival is nigh,
Southern constellations, scatter joy upon the sky.
In December, the warm and silent nights are dry,
‘Not a flake of snowfall to blur the brilliance of the sky.

Good folk all remember, wonderful December, Hail! The gorgeous day is here –
Rejoice the ending of the year!
Christians all remember, wonderful December, Hail! The gorgeous boy is here –
Rejoice his first two thousand years!

In December, the symbols of our northern past,
Pine and holly berries cannot serve a land so vast.
In December, the soft and silky ocean blast,
‘midst the whispering sand-dunes we watch the heavens wander past.

Good folk all remember, wonderful December… etc.

In December, the ocean shining in the glare,
Underneath the She-Oak; shade and shelter waiting there.
In December, the colours of the northern cold:
Green and red and silver; outshone by blue and white and gold!

Good folk all remember, wonderful December, Hail! - The gorgeous day is here –
Rejoice the ending of the year!
Christians all remember, wonderful December, Hail! - The gorgeous boy is here –
Rejoice his first two thousand years!
